Summer is traditionally thought of as the season of lightweight grooming, and in Australia, it’s an approach that makes a lot of sense. We don’t want to be weighed down with uber-expensive moisturisers and sticky pomades. It’s simply easier to keep things light and breezy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take a few simple, lo-fi steps to make sure you’re looking your best and protecting the skin and hair that treats you so well while you’re at it. Here are some grooming upgrades you should be making if you’re going to be spending the next few months venturing into the great outdoors.
Invest in an SPF Moisturiser
While it’s all too common to want to slather sunscreen over your chops as soon as you head out into the sun, most all-purpose sunscreen is a nightmare for your face’s more delicate pores, especially if you’re prone to breakouts and bouts of oily skin. For this reason, it’s worth having an SPF-rated facial moisturiser or a facial sunscreen at hand to keep your face protected while also allowing it to breathe a little more. Moisturisers with SPF are great for day-to-day, while for sport and days at the beach, switch to sun care that’s a little more heavy duty and provides at least 30+ SPF protection.
Upgrade your sunscreen
It’s time to wave goodbye to the crusty 1L pump bottle of sunscreen that’s been sitting in the boot of your car for who knows how long. While protection should always be the number one priority, there are now more brands than ever making sunscreen that’s good for your skin and better for our oceans (in particular, our coral reefs). Beachfox’s range of sunscreens are reef and ocean safe, come in a range of great scents, are Australian-made (and therefore part of our Considered Edit), and are both sweat and water-resistant.
Keep your fragrance cool and light
Choosing a summer fragrance can be a bit of a minefield, but we always think it best to keep things light and fresh if you’re unsure. Opt for fresher fragrances that have citrusy, green and ozonic top notes rather than those that hit you in the face with spice and wood. Even opting for a body wash with the same notes can sometimes be enough to keep you smelling fresh.
Try a natural deodorant
While it’s tempting to invest in the strongest antiperspirant you can find this summer, it’s much healthier for your skin to let it breathe and sweat properly without clogging your sweat glands up with chemicals. Thankfully, male-oriented natural deodorants do exist, which help keep sweat and odours at bay with an array of powerful plant-based ingredients.
After-shave gel is your new best friend
Looking after your skin after a long day in the sun is just as important as protecting it during the hottest days of summer. Even if you haven’t copped a sunburn, we love the all-purpose cooling of after shave balm. Normally enriched with soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera and Chamomile to help fight off razor burn, it also doubles as the perfect cooling cream if you’re feeling like your face could use some extra TLC.
