The surge of eco tourism since the turn of the millennium has led the hiking trails and national parks of the world to become increasingly congested. In fact, it's all too common to get to a seemingly idyllic bit of nature, only to find it overcrowded with tourists looking to get the same experience of tranquillity as you were. But the world is a big place, and there are still thousands of secluded trails and incredible hiking regions to go around, boasting top-tier scenery and great facilities, without the crowds. Here are some of our favourites.

The Coast-to-Coast Walk, England
The coast-to-coast track, as it's called, is one of the best ways to experience the surprising diversity of scenery that the UK has to offer. Stretching from England's weather-beaten Northwest coast, across the mountainous spine of Britain, over rugged moorland and ending in the picturesque Yorkshire dales, you can jump on and off the trail knowing a good pub is never too far away to reward you for your efforts.

Egmont National Park, New Zealand
The Middle Earth-esque scenery of NZ is enough to draw thousands of tourists to all parts of the country each year, but the North Island's Egmont National Park is perhaps its most untouched gem. The park boasts a litany of lush forests, waterfalls and rainforests, all surrounding Mount Taranaki: a picturesque dormant volcano that towers up from the park's centre.

The Camino Del Norte, Spain
Stretching across Spain's northern perimeter, the Camino Del Norte is at once a chance to experience some of the Iberian peninsula's best food, best scenery and most historic landmarks. Following the route used by pilgrims for centuries, it takes in stunning beaches, world-famous foodie towns like San Sebastian, and picturesque fishing villages.

K2 Base Camp, Pakistan
Winding its way through the Karakoram mountain range, the K2 walk, which leads up to the base of the world's second-highest mountain, is nothing short of spectacular. It’s significantly quieter than the popular Everest trek, so if you’re looking for a peaceful escape that allows you to be at one with nature, this would be our pick.
