Whether you blame the changing way in which we all work, the rise of start-up culture or the fact that it's simply not that practical to dress up like Don Draper every time you want to go to work, the fact remains that even the most traditionally uptight companies have laxed their dress rules in the last few years. Perhaps inspired by the less formal approach many modern workplaces are taking to employees expressing their sense of style, office-ready menswear has never been a more fluid concept.
That being said, there are still workplaces in which dressing up a little more than usual is still the expectation. But that doesn't mean you have to shuck modern trends—nor does it mean you have to don the same boring suits day in, day out. Here, we present a few tips to see you back into the office looking, and feeling, like you're putting your best sartorial foot forward.
1. Invest in separates, rather than complete suits.
If you're only just building an office-ready wardrobe, or simply want to shake things up a bit, consider investing in some more eye-catching jackets and trousers rather than going the whole hog and getting an entirely new suit. Not only do many brands tend to be more flamboyant on statement pieces like blazers and trousers, but they can often be easily mixed and matched with the pieces you already have to create an endless array of looks.
2. Consider different shirt styles.
While many people have already ditched the tie in 2022, we think it's worth reconsidering the shirt as well. Moving away from the classic, crisp-collared shirt is the easiest way to breathe a shot of life into even the most boring of suiting styles, and there are so many options to play with. Polo shirts and camp collar shirts layered underneath a suit jacket look great, as do heavyweight tees.
3. Play with materials.
Style-savvy Australians, more than anyone else, know the power of switching out the classic wool suit for something a little less structured and a little more breathable, and as such, more and more companies are branching out to make suits from more summery fabrics. Whether linen, cotton or seersucker, these suits are generally less structured, less formal and less rigid to both wear and behold, making them the perfect choice for workplaces where you're still expected to make an effort, but don't need to dress like a '90s investment banker.
