How To Dress When Seemingly Every Day Is Casual Friday

3 tips to take your smart casual style to new heights.

The ideal of 'smart casual' has completely changed in recent years. While once it meant maybe pairing your suit with an open-neck shirt at most, these days almost everything can constitute a smart-casual fit. Streetwear and high fashion have bled into each other in a way that has blurred the lines between casual and formal, meaning we're seeing a more diverse array of fits than ever before in smart casual settings, whether it's a swanky bar, an engagement party or the office of a start-up.

That said, there are still a few rules to follow to make sure you're putting your best foot forward. Because after all, smart casual clothing isn't just about adhering to a dress code, it's about catching the eye as well.

1. Keep a few high-quality tees on hand.

While we all own one or two, not all plain t-shirts are made equal, and there's nothing that'll cheapen an outfit faster than pairing a smart jacket or a pair of trousers with something that looks like you got it on sale in a moment of desperation. Having one or two heavyweight tees on hand is a great way to add versatility to your wardrobe, whether to layer under a blazer or simply tuck into some smart trousers for a summer-ready get-up.

2. Get a pair of boardroom-to-bar shoes.

This doesn't necessarily need to mean either bright white sneakers or a pair of chelsea boots, but footwear is key when it comes to nailing the smart casual look in 2022, and there are a bunch of in-vogue options to choose from. Loafers can be paired with everything from jeans to suits, as can classic basketball and tennis shoes, moccasins and even, increasingly, mules.

3. Upgrade your chinos.

There's something just a little bit unflattering about the ten-a-penny skinny chinos you see so many guys wearing to the office or pairing with a blazer at a wedding. The perfect upgrade from this, however, is a good pair of tailoring-inspired wool or linen trousers, something that can easily be picked up from any brand that makes good suits. Get a pair that are slim, yet a little looser than your standard skinny fit pants, and cropped at the ankle for seamless pairing with sneakers and boots. You'll be amazed at how versatile, and smart, they look.
