Call it a subconscious new-term, clean-slate feeling or something altogether simpler, but our favourite thing about the change in seasons is proper shoes.

Of course, we love the cosy weight of new knitwear and the easy cool of the season’s denim, but there’s something so specific about the satisfaction of winter shoes. Being lucky enough to live in a balmy Aussie climate, our pedicured toes can be on show for the majority of the year – perhaps that’s why we relish a few short months to channel a Euro take on cool-weather chic.
Sure, we could live in our white sneakers all year round but they don’t give the same smart feeling as ‘proper’ shoes. Leather loafers – in glossy black leather, deep mahogany and soft sandy shades – just have an air of being ready for the job at hand, whatever it happens to be. Wear them to your next Monday meeting and we defy you not to take work very seriously.

This year we’re easing into our beloved boots with interim autumn footwear in the form of trending ballet flats. The dainty everyday slip-on has been hovering around the periphery for a few seasons and now we’re ready to step in. They beg to be worn with ankle-length denim and the return of the cardigan.

Before winter really appears, now’s the time to find your soon-to-be most-worn footwear of the season and find hard working boots before your wishlisted favourites sell out (we’ve kicked ourselves too many times over biding our time).
You’ll be happy to know that chunky styles are going nowhere – the bestselling Blundstone 585 boots are ideal for city stomping and on out-of-town escapades, but if you’re after something on the softer side, UGG boots are our comfycore shoe of choice, in and out of the house.
We’re also fans of the ‘proper’ feel of knee-high boots worn with the season’s long denim skirts and aforementioned comeback cardigan, while ankle boots will become your strappy sandal alternative to evening outings for the next few months.

Maybe it’s because there were more interesting things than studying when we were actually at school that the new-term feeling of having a fresh start, the world at your feet, really appeals. Whatever the reason, we’re organising our Wishlists right now to make sure we don’t miss out on the pairs we’ve got hearted.
