It’s easy to fall in love with the glamorous big sister of Ibiza, but the relaxed lush alternative of the Balearic archipelago, Mallorca is fast becoming the rising star for azure-drenched escapes. Complete with all the niceties of urban Europe, yet still shimmering with that untouched island feel. Bobbing wooden boats, a turquoise bay and ancient sun-faded architecture. Although many a tourist tends to head for the north coast, we zoomed in on the buzzing capital city, Palma, where a hip little fishing enclave named Santa Catalina resides. The vibe here resembles a chilled-out, mini Barcelona but with a melting pot of trendy gastronomic flavours. Given its former reputation for being a fashionable haunt back in the 1930s, you won’t be short of exquisite sights in town and the surroundings. Between mountainous hikes, art nouveau mansions and ultra-cool crowds, there’s much to get lost in, in this seaside village.

Stay at... Boutique hotel Can Alomar — Go on, treat yourself. A magnificent former palace right in the heart of town, chic five-star luxury without the naff ruffles. Retreat to the enchanting rooftop terrace in the heat of the day.

Eat at… Duke — a smart beach shack with a fusion of asian, med and south American, with a funky lo-fi mood. Spot — think locally sourced mediterranean cuisine and wood-fire pizza. Worth taste-testing the finely curated Mallorcan wines too. For a coffee break? Mama Carmen’s — Modern, healthy and raw. It’s hard to beat the Australian knack for good coffee, but this cafe makes a rich cosmopolitan brew. Easy to find a chai latte too if that is your thing.

Deià via @hrrbhn
Day trip… To the prettiest village on the island, Deià. Where the mountains meet the sea. It has been a magnet for famous artists, writers and creatives in its time. Check out the UNESCO World Heritage site that surrounds the place, the Serra de Tramuntana.

What to pack… Elegant resort wear. Linen shirts, A-line summer dresses, translucent cat-eye shades and espadrilles. Footwear is very respected here so ditch the flip-flops. And dress code for restaurants does not include bikinis or shorts. Locals won’t be polite about it.
