There is no formula to attraction. Personal style, confidence and charisma are by far a bigger cause of magnetism between two people than what you wear, but it would be naive to say that it doesn’t matter at all. What we choose to put on for a date says something about us. Being comfortable in your own clothes and your own skin should be your priority.

For 32-year-old graphic designer David from Sydney, first impressions are important when it comes to date night. “I’m drawn to colour” he says, “some pizzazz on a dress or a dash of bright lipstick stands out for me but it should always be something that is comfortable. I find that the more comfortable people feel the more comfortable people are in themselves. That goes for shoes too! My back just can’t handle late night piggy backs home because someone chose to wear stilettos.”

25-year-old Dean from Sydney agrees. Spending all day wearing high-vis and steel-capped boots, he enjoys it when both he and his partner make an effort when they go out. “As a same-sex couple we like to wear what we like each other to wear,” he laughs. “Sometimes we’ll turn up to dinner wearing the same kind of shirt and the same kind of pants. But for me it’s about personality, about showing the best of yourself. My partner is a bit flash. He likes to wear jewellery, pendants and earrings. It’s nice. He twinkles on date night, which means I twinkle too.”
