What Sons of the East Will Be Wearing Off-Stage And On

It might include feather boas and clogs…

Like the rest of us, local indie boys Sons of the East have been counting down the days for live gigs to start up again. We took Nic, Dan and Jack for a pizza at one of Sydney’s most-fun venues and asked them what they’ve been up to since the world saw them last.

Boys! As a band, what can you not wait for when live music opens up properly again?
“Dancing on your feet and that beautiful view from the stage.”

What have you learnt over this last year while everything has turned on its head?
“We’ve learnt Spanish, how to knit and Dan has become proficient in Mahjong.”

What’s been the importance of music during this crazy time?
“For us music has been keeping us sane! With so much spare time it's been good just to sit at our instruments and dabble.”

How have you been staying connected? With fans, friends, each other...
“Mostly through carrier pigeons and the occasional fax.”

Vegemite toast – love it or hate it?
“Vegemite toast is a staple in our diet. It's an imperative item for us to take on tour, especially when we go international. A tube of Vegemite is a must-have.”

What’s been the best thing about some time at home in Aus?
“Definitely taking time to relax and just enjoy the beauty of Sydney.”

What do people love about Aussies when you go overseas?
“Our classic laid back attitude.”

How would you describe your style?
“Our style is all quite an eclectic mix of surf, Japanese-American denim, 50-70s retro. I guess whatever we are feeling on the day. We sometimes like to turn it up for our on stage outfits though.”

Tell us about your favourite item(s) of clothing and how they make you feel.
“We all have a special item which we can’t live without. Nic has his signature feather boa, Dan has an especially short silk robe that leaves nothing to the imagination, and we can’t forget Jack’s wooden Dutch clogs.”

Who or what inspires you most?
“What inspires us the most are the other musicians that are taking risks and consistently putting out great stuff. Nothing lights a fire in one’s belly more than hearing your contemporaries drop a banger.”

What’s your first plan when we can travel internationally again?
“Excluding a tour overseas it would have to be a surf trip. We all love getting a wave or two, so jumping over to Indonesia would be a dream for all of us right now.”
