When you do emerge from hibernation and attempt to use public transport again, you may remember we used to be surgically attached to these swipey card things that went *ding* and magically allowed us to get from a to b.
Deciding, the other day, that I really couldn’t avoid getting a bus (I don’t have a car – I’ve been walking everywhere, including into the city when needed), it rudely dawned on me I’d have to locate said magical card (not to mention pray there was some dollar on it).
Ah yes, an Opal card. That was the one. (See Myki / SmartRider / Go Card / MyWay / Metrocard) all you the other state capitals.
I looked in the usual places, not in the – streamlined to just a bank card and ID these days – wallet. Baffled.
I rummaged through drawers, my with-me-everywhere canvas totes, and jacket pockets.
Seriously, where could it be? I had no clue.
The next morning, my brain kicked in and I remembered proper bags were once a thing. As recently as March, no less.
Hunting through the multiple bags that were in rotation just a few short months ago, I found the coveted card in the front pocket of a backpack, flung high into the upper shelf of the wardrobe.
I know I’m not the only one resurrecting their Opal card – it’s been a common coming-out-of-lockdown milestone in the ol’ group chat, which has got us thinking … remember how we used to take a proper bag everywhere we went?

Predominantly in the house, neglecting our outdoor shoes, for a while there we were only popping out to pick up a coffee – no handbag needed. But now that we can tentatively emerge from our cocoons, back into the real world, we can once again delight in how deliciously outfit-completing the perfect bag is.
"Bags are the easiest way for me to add character to my outfits," THE ICONIC's Fashion Content Editor, Eliza says. "I wear a lot of black, and other accessories like earrings and necklaces irritate me, so bags are where I can introduce colour and texture. I personally love them novelty-sized, like ridiculously small, because all I ever really need is my key, phone and lip balm."
No matter how much you stash them with, the style you choose is the first real indicator of who you are as a person. A signal to the world on how you wish to portray yourself.

Obviously, we are multifaceted and can be all of those things at any given time. Who says we can’t have one for every mood? Just don’t relegate them to the wardrobe and forget they exist.
