Sofia Coppola gave us The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation, The Bling Ring, Somewhere and more. She showed us how to make days turn into weeks at the Chateau Marmont and how to pass the time in Tokyo and reminded that we weren’t alone in the way we felt deep, deep down as 13-year-old girls.
“When it comes to revealing the inner workings of women, there's no one quite like Sofia Coppola,” wrote GQ.
The New York-born, California-raised auteur started life as an extra. Daughter of film legend Francis Ford Coppola, she was the go-to cameo. Always on set, she was forever available by default.
“I never really wanted to be an actress,” she told Interview Magazine. “I just did it when my dad asked me to.”

And for that, we thank our lucky stars. Every film with her hand on it, we watch on repeat. She has the midas touch of all that we want to see.
Stephen Dorff, the man who headlined the long LA days in Somewhere, knows it.
“When she casts me, everyone thinks I’m cool again,” he told The Guardian.
Coppola, though, isn’t drinking that particular Kool-Aid.
“Oh God, really? I’m cool? It’s just funny if people think that … I was watching some clips of myself on the red carpet from last night and I feel, like, so dorky on them. I’m really nerdy. And I live with a 10-year-old who thinks I’m very uncool.”
Here are a few of her go-to looks we’re borrowing as our own.
