The Best Makeup To Wear For Your Eye Shape

Find out how to enhance your eye shape and elevate your look with makeup.

Ever wanted to know the best way to wear eye makeup for your eye shape? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Whether you’ve got almond, round, monolid, downturned, hooded, upturned or prominent-shaped eyes, the right makeup technique can accentuate your features and make those peepers pop. And since our eyes are the windows to our soul, why wouldn’t you want them to look incredible?

We asked M.A.C Education Manager, Ocea McKenzie, for her best tips on how to enhance every eye shape with makeup

Almond Eyes

What are almond-shaped eyes?
Almond-shaped eyes are seen as a classic well-balanced eye shape. The characteristics of an almond eye are that the outer corners sit slightly higher than the inner corner – this is what gives that lioness feel to the eye.

What makeup is the most flattering for almond-shaped eyes?
Almond-shaped eyes can wear any style of makeup, particularly makeup styles that further enhance the shape such as a winged liner or a blown-out winged shadow shape.

Round Eyes

What are round eyes?
Rounded eyes are exactly as they sound, they are rounded in shape.

What makeup is the most flattering for round eyes?
To add balance to a rounded shape you can wing out the eyes with eye shadow in medium-depth tones and pencil liners that can be smudged and blended. This gives the illusion of a more almond and lifted shape.

Monolid Eyes

What are monolid eyes?
Monolid eyes are an eye shape without a pronounced crease. They’re also known as shallow or smooth eyes as the eyelids appear small relative to the remaining eye space.

What makeup is the most flattering for monolid eyes?
Creating depth and dimension using deep, smokey shades around the entire eye can create balance. A smokey look where you smoke up underneath the eye can look incredible and widen the eye. Lashes that are fluttery are also really flattering on this eye shape.

Downturned Eyes

What are downturned eyes?
Downturned or descending eyes are where you see the outer corners of the eye sit slightly lower than the inner corner of the eye. It’s the opposite of the almond shape.

What makeup is the most flattering for downturned eyes?
To lift the outer corners of this eye shape use medium to dark shades in upward placement on the outer corners. Avoid heavy eyeliner on the outer lower lash line as this will only further pull down the eye shape.

Hooded Eyes

What are hooded eyes?
Hooded eyes (also known as eyes with a deep set lid) are where you will see a heavy crease that overshadows the eyelid. When the eyes are open you cannot see much of the eyelid at all and it’s the brow bone that appears most prominent.

What makeup is the most flattering for hooded eyes?
You want to use lighter colours and more reflective textures on the actual eyelid itself and then use a medium to a darker shade to create a crease with the illusion of depth. Apply liner close to the lash line. Eyeliner can look fabulous on a hooded eye but looks best when applied with the eye open and in a batwing liner shape.

Upturned Eyes

What are upturned eyes?
Upturned eyes are where you will see the outer corner of the eye sit slightly higher than the inner corner.

What makeup is the most flattering for upturned eyes?
Anything that really pulls the eye makeup out with gorgeous liner or extended blown-out eye shadow.

Prominent Eyes

What are Prominent Eyes
Prominent or protruding eye shapes are where the top and the bottom lid are very pronounced.

What Makeup is the most flattering for Prominent eyes?
Tight lining and creating smokiness both top and bottom looks incredible for prominent eyes. Lashes are also a key player to help balance a prominent eye shape.
