“Ultra marathons, multi sport events, multi stage races, 24-hour obstacle races …” Ben Seymour - pro athlete and personal trainer - is listing for us what he names as endurance sports. “There are sooo many that come to mind.”
His next long-distance number is the Bali Hope. A casual “84 kilometre run, coast to coast” to raise much-needed funds for the Bali Children Foundation.
So, how can you prepare for a race like this?

“Build up your endurance slowly,” says Seymour. “If you’ve never done an endurance race then I don’t recommend doing what I did and sign up for a 250 kilometre run across the Atacama Desert in Chile!
“Take your time to ensure your body adapts to the training. Research the event and find out exactly what you need to prep for.”
Some traps for young players Seymour flags are high altitude and heat will lead to swollen feet. If you’re running at altitude, be sure to “get your shoes a size bigger!”
“Also, don’t neglect your strength training! Although you won’t necessarily gain strength, I think it’s important to maintain as much strength as you can.”
Support is key.
“My good friend Samantha Gash is looking after my running program which allows me to relax and just follow the program in which I trust as she is an absolute weapon,” says Seymour.
There are tools to keep you on track. For example, Map My Run allows you to synch with your Under Armour Smart Shoes, helping you track everything from pace to stride length and cadence, plus it serves you personalised coaching tips as you train. Another is My Fitness Pal, a tool to help you get on top of your goals when it comes to what you eat. Plus, support is just a click away.

Below, Seymour shares his how-to and training tips (thank you Ben!).
Tell us a little about your own personal training routine for big events like this?
For my previous events I have just thrown myself in the deep end and worked it out on the run. I really enjoy facing obstacles and having to come up with strategies on the run. I would recommend this for everyone!
Any myths you need to bust when it comes to endurance training?
You’re capable of a lot more than you actually think. Push through the mental barriers which you will inevitably face and continue on. Have a purpose that is derived internally and actually means something to you personally and you’ll be surprised what you can achieve!
What's a great work-out for someone who is looking to up their endurance?
I enjoy incorporating strength and conditioning work together when training for an endurance event. This is a fav session of mine when I’ve only got an hour to spare!
