The cicadas are buzzing and your dad’s pushing the lawn mower around the yard. On his feet he’s wearing the trusty, chunky white sneakers he always wears. They aren’t exactly cool, but they’re definitely practical.
Sounds familiar, right?
Except it’s no longer the nineties. It’s 2018. And instead of your old man wearing the sneakers, it’s YOU.
Are we being punked? Nope, that style of shoes your dad used to wear back in the day when you were watching The Land Before Time on repeat and playing Mario Kart with the kids next door… yeah, they suddenly got cool again.
Dad sneakers are back, guys.
Although, you’ve probably already noticed that. Kim Kardashian barely goes anywhere without wearing them with her signature Yeezy neutral vibes. Then there’s the hot, young model crew on board...
Hailey Baldwin has been seen totally owning them on her coffee runs, Bella Hadid wears them with everything from blazers to bike shorts, and Kendall Jenner has rocked them with a longline coat before. Not to mention literally every fashion blogger who knows what’s up.

The dad sneaker trend first really took hold during New York Fashion Week fall 2018. Hanging outside every show were some seriously chunky dad sneakers on the feet of the who’s who of fashion.
So, why is everyone so obsessed? First of all, we love a retro trend. It’s nostalgic. You know, it reminds us of carefree times as a kid, seeing your dad rocking them. Also, they’re SO comfortable. We love heels, but it’s refreshing when a flats trend takes off and we can all give our feet a little breather.
And, plot twist: they can actually be flattering. Stick with us, here...
You see, the new versions are designed with a thicker sole (sometimes two or three layers), making you look taller and your legs look longer. Unlike your dad’s, expect new-age curves, pops of pastel and subtle details that bring them into 2018. And did we mention they’re the COMFIEST ever?
The runway is one thing, but how do we wear them in the ‘real world’? Keep the rest of your look pretty understated. The look goes so well with the slouchy, oversized suits that are in right now. You can also team them with mum jeans and oversized jumpers. Style them with longer white socks pulled up.
It’s a trend that’ll last the entirety of 2018. Trust us, this is gonna stick around. And who knows, your kids might even want to nick them one day, so these babies could become a collector’s item.
Just don’t let your dad steal them.
