A coat is for life, not just for Christmas. It’s a commitment. A fun one, sure, but not one to take lightly. The right coat can take you places. An Oasis concert back when the brothers were talking… A Europe trip you’ll never forget.
We asked some of our mates to tell us about the outerwear they never want to part with.
“One jacket I'll keep forever is my vintage French work jacket – definitely gets a lot of compliments,” says Conor. “It's bright blue, but still incredibly versatile. Full of pockets and the perfect thing to wear when you need a little extra layer. I've managed to rip seams and tear off buttons, but the jacket lives.”
Sometimes versatility is key. “I do have a favourite coat. It’s a navy Reiss one,” says Sam. “Goes with everything. It’s smart enough to work with a suit but also goes well with casual stuff. It’s a good material. Good amount of pockets.”
Sometimes it’s the perfect find. “My blue Naval jacket I found in an op shop in San Francisco in 2008. I won’t part with it as it fits like a glove,” says Luke. “It's super warm, it's a naval jacket so it's been wet treated, one of those button-up old school styles. That classic type jacket that other brands have copied and been inspired by but it's an original one. I’ve worn it everywhere.”
Or the memories… “I also have a navy blue overcoat that dad used to wear to footy training when I was a kid at football games. Everyone used to call him the style master when he used to wear it and 15 years ago he gave it to me. It reminds me of dad.”
“The other one is a Mambo one I bought in 1996 at the Mambo store on Oxford Street. I was moving to Canberra to go to uni and needed a cold weather jacket and then Sam from brand the critical slide society saw me in it recently and he worked at Mambo then and he actually designed it way back then and was like, “Dude I know that jacket, I designed that jacket.” It’s super utilitarian, beige, boxy, lots of pockets. It’s the jacket you can thrash.”
