Our Favourite Sydney Picnic Spots

From Sydney’s northern beaches to a hidden harbourside gem, you can’t go past these perfect picnic spots.

Enjoy cheese and crackers? Gotta show someone a good time? Parents visiting from out of town? Whether it’s with your mates, on a date, or just looking to enjoy the good weather, make the most of the longer days and show off Sydney’s must-do local picnic spots.

1) Whale Beach

Located on Sydney’s northern beaches, this glorious stretch of sand is a favourite of model and instagram personality, Zipporah Seven, and we can see why. At the right time of year, you’ll see whales on their seasonal migration on the horizon, and if you’re lucky, a pod of dolphins playing in the waves. When the weather is good, this spot is hard to beat. All you need to bring is a picnic rug, some snacks, and good company.

2) Coogee Nature Reserve

Granted, you’ll need a cushion for this spot, but getting a good position on the rocks offers up some of the best views of the Pacific that Sydney has to offer. At the right time of day, you’ll be able to watch scuba divers checking out the underwater trail in Gordon’s Bay, or a couple stray surfers catching the offshore swell.

3) Shark Beach

Don’t let the name fool you - if you like a good view of the harbour, you’ll love this hidden little spot in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. In a city that’s famous for its beaches, this is among one of the more underrated for a quiet picnic with friends. Shark Beach also has a netted swimming area, so be sure to bring a pair of swimmers for a refreshing dip.

4) Camperdown Memorial Rest Park

If your idea of a good time is watching some furry four legged mates run and play, you can’t go past this dog-central park. Just a short walk from Newtown Station, it’s a picnic spot with a friendly and vibrant energy. Be sure to bring a football as you’re bound to find someone to throw a few passes with, and don’t be surprised if you get chatting with a few of the locals.

5) Centennial Park

An obvious pick for a cheese platter, but this central Sydney park deserves a mention. With an endless variety of glorious spots - by the ponds, over the hill, or by the sports fields, Centennial Park caters to just about every picnic need. It even has a load of parking and local facilities, so it’s a fuss-free location to spread out and enjoy everything the afternoon has to offer.
