Summer lovers lament – winter is just around the corner, bringing with it a slew of new cool-weather trends to try. Already working their way into our wardrobes are the season’s earthy colour palette, classic trenches and stylish layering. But what should we be wearing on our feet? Our buyers are promising a new silhouette in your footwear this season, with a boot trend you’ll climb mountains for.
Introducing: the hiking boot. Defined by their chunky tread (with extra points for contrasting laces), our buying team first spotted this alpine style marching down runways, before appearing on the streets outside the shows. And while you may be traversing sidewalks instead of mountain trails, take it from our buyers: hiking boots should be the next purchase on your autumn shopping list.

“Chunky footwear is one of the biggest trends this season with hiking boots being the key style. My favourite thing about hiker boots is that they’re super versatile – we’ve seen them worn with a flowy dress or with mom jeans and a fitted top for a more casual look,” says Women’s Junior Buyer, Liz Costi. The early-adopters are already nailing the look. “Hailey Bieber has been seen wearing them with really oversized shirts or with a sporty jacket and bike shorts.”
Peri Jane Crosby, Women’s Buying Manager, has seen this all-weather style appearing the world over. “First spotted in Copenhagen fashion week, the hiking boot is a must-have if you want to achieve the cool Scandi-girl look. Keep your eyes peeled in our new arrivals for a wide offer of styles from Alias Mae, See by Chloé, Bronx and more.”

Despite their distinctive appearance, hiking boots are a throw-on-and-go style, and sure, we don’t have the alpine winters, but they do have added functionality for the cooler months, according to Women’s Buyer Nicky Clark. “It is such an easy shoe to wear and just so happens that this amazing silhouette is also super-practical. No need to throw style out the window just because it’s cold or raining. You can brave the elements and still look good while you do it.” Josh Nunan, Women’s Footwear Buyer, agrees, “The hiking boot is an easy trend transition from the classic ankle boot, and can be worn with anything from streetwear to bohemian looks.”
If you’re still hesitant, try a pair of hiking boots in a less literal colour, such as white. Pairing wintery white hiker lace-up boots breaks up an all black ensemble, and creates a monochrome look that doesn’t require a lot of thought. For a nomadic take on the trend, match a pair of black hiking boots with a printed maxi dress and oversized teddy coat. Or, for a dead-easy street style outfit with a current edge, wear your hiking boots with bike shorts and a tee.
