We know holiday gift giving can sometimes be a little overwhelming, especially when friends and extended family are involved, so we asked Matty J and Laura Byrne to shed some light on how they tackle the holiday season. From gift ideas to what to wear and how to best enjoy the day, let this guide you to your best festive holiday yet. Plus, gain a little insight into how they spend their day, spoiler: it’s Mariah Carey, candy canes for breakfast and utter chaos.
What does your ideal Christmas Day look like?
MATT: I'll start the day with a cleansing green juice, followed by a 15km run and meditation session... my hat goes off to anyone that starts Christmas this way. The dream for me would be presents in the morning followed by a cheeky drink, my body weight in prawns, afternoon nap, a few servings of pavlova annnnnnnd that's it! Without wanting to sound really lame, after the last 12 months, I'm going to be so happy to spend it with the fam. As long as we're all together, that's all that matters (as long as I still get a few presents).
LAURA: Ideally I would love a sleep in, but with two kids I feel like that is out of Santa's realm of possibilities. So I would settle with a 6:30am wake up by Marlie excited to open presents. This is the first year that she is old enough to really understand the whole Christmas concept and it's just the best thing ever to see her little face light up when we talk about Santa. Hopefully we will be up in QLD seeing Matt's mum who we have missed during lock down and spending the day eating roast ham and blasting a bit of Mariah around the house.
Christmas carols: love or loathe?
MATT: I'm going to sound like the biggest Grinch but I don't like Christmas songs (ahhhh I can feel the hate coming right for me)! Years ago I did a job in the UK for a supermarket brand where we converted a double decker bus into a portable kitchen/restaurant and gave out free turkey dinners. For almost 12 days straight I travelled across the UK hearing nothing but Christmas songs on repeat. All day. Every day. This job has ruined almost every Christmas song except for Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You. So, long story short... that is the only song I'll allow.
LAURA: Ahhhh Mariah is well and truly getting a solid nudge in our household, only to be momentarily swapped out for The Wiggles Christmas Special. One of my favourite parts of Christmas is watching Carols In The Domain – it's the best way to get into the spirit.
Christmas Day dressing – do you keep within the festive theme?
MATT: I have an elf outfit from last year, which might come out for a second run. If Laura vetoes this, I'll just go for the punchiest shirt in my wardrobe. Then I might transition into some linen for later (if I'm trying to keep it classy).
LAURA: I feel like Christmas Day is the one day you put on nice clothes to have lunch in your family home. It's such a great excuse to wear a new festive dress, something patterned and summery.

What are you hoping for under the tree?
MATT: Laura please pay close attention. I need a new pair of boardies (Double Rainbouu would be nice), Aesop Post-poo Drops (don't ask) and maybe some new Nike gym gear. Ohhh and underwear – it's the one time of the year I get to top up my underwear drawer so it's imperative this doesn't get missed. Is it too much to ask for a beach towel as well?
LAURA: I am angling for some new bed linen and some nice homewares. We have just started our wishlist for our new home, so I am collecting items that I want for when we make the big move.
How do you make the day special for your kids Marlie-Mae and Lola?
MATT: Like Laura said, there are no rules on Christmas Day. You want a candy cane for breakfast? No problem! Chocolate for lunch? I thought you'd never ask! It's a day where the only important thing is having fun, so whatever the girls want to do (within reason) we'll allow it. The girls also LOVE to dance, so Laura and I will be fully prepared for a marathon day of cutting moves.
LAURA: We are big on decorations in our house and making the day all about play. The routine goes out the window and you'll find us dancing around eating treats at 10am. It's utter chaos, but it's good for the soul.
What’s on the gifting list for family and friends this year?
MATT: I'm one of five kids so Christmas used to totally break the bank, which is why we decided to only do Secret Santa. Whenever we pick out names, it only takes a few days before we secretly swap to a sibling we know we can easily buy for. I always end up with my sister so I'll most likely get her anything from AERE. I love love love the brand and everything they make so I know I can't go wrong. Laura, please also add a few AERE items to my Wishlist.
LAURA: We keep gift giving pretty tight-knit, just immediate family on my side and Matt's side does Secret Santa. It's easy to get carried away but we try to keep to a bit of a budget. My sister is probably the hardest person to buy for, but she is a big fan of Aesop so that is high on the list of safe options. She is also a big fan of my AERE leather sandals, so I think I'll be getting her a pair of those, I might just get another pair for myself while I'm at it as I have worn mine to death!
