Many Muses of Marc Jacobs

The ultra-cool women who inspire the designer.

Defining the Marc Jacobs woman is like bottling sunshine. Throughout his ancient history on the fashion scene the designer’s muses have been as kaleidoscopic as his outfit choices. Note: his tartan kilt in 2009. His source of inspiration seems to be ignited by a colourful spectrum of ultra-cool women. From his eternal love for fresh face director Sophia Coppola who starred in many of his campaigns and designed a range of shoes and bags for Louis Vuitton. To the more recent unapologetic pop stars like Cardi B and Lady Gaga who have championed his quirkier influences.

He’s had Victoria Beckham pose in giant shopping bags and custom-made clothes to fit a then 12 year-old prodigy Dakota Fanning. Kate Moss has been his forever muse from the start. And he’s got a thing for indie grunge girls like Winona Ryder, Kim Gordon and Rock royalty Frances Bean Cobain. So what is the je ne sais quoi that weaves all these distinctive beauties together? From runway, front row and campaigns his casting flavour has a soft spot for the women who dare to dance to their own beat whether in flannel or a power suit. The rebel girls, experimenters and urban explorers. To celebrate his 56th birthday we take a deep dive through the archives to soak in the radiance of his female frontier.
