There is a common misconception that wearing neutral colours is somehow boring. Safe. Unimaginative even. We’re here to dispel that myth. Mono palette dressing is huge in some of the fashion capitals we look to most for inspiration – Copenhagen, Milan – and championed by labels like Assembly Label and Jac + Jack. The trick is to understand the tones and the textures. And, when in doubt, look to the stylish men of Pitti Uomo for inspiration.
1. Shirts
Linen and cotton shirts lend themselves to neutral tones. Whether dialled back in colour or strictly beige in tone, looser fitting shirts in weightier fabrics mean they hang from the shoulders in a flattering way. Look for shirts with a clear torso structure, a fit that doesn’t cling.

2. Shorts
How short is too short? Opt for mid-thigh length cuts in a tapered fit but with a little space to let the muscle breathe. Choose a variation of beige that will counter the neutral tones of your shirt. Chino shorts often come in darker shades whilst linen shorts look just as great in off-white as they do darker hues of ochre.

3. Chinos
For that neutral palette, steer clear of chinos that contain a lot of yellow. Stick to tans and shades that veer towards a balanced brown. Make sure they fit your shape. Larger fellas can benefit from a looser wide-legged fit with rolled up cuffs whilst slimmer legs can afford a tighter crop to the leg. Lighter colours enhance the contours of the frame so fit is important if you’re bigger.

4. Jackets
Go unlined or deconstructed when it comes to sports jackets and blazers in neutral tones. Look for stitching details, interesting pockets and collar shapes to counterweight the flat block of tonal colour. Heavier cottons and linens fall from the shoulders better than lighter jacket styles so be aware of more flattering drapes in mid to darker tones.

5. Bags
Postman satchels in tan leathers are great if you need something that performs a real function, while simple hessian or cotton totes get most jobs done for a quick hop to the shops. The trick is to keep them clean and uncomplicated.
