What are you doing this Saturday? Picnic with the family? Afternoon at the beach?
Well, it just so happens to be World Clean Up Day this Sat 19th September so why not spend half an hour making our environment a little better with a quick litter-pick on your trip to the park / beach / gym? Why not go one step further and up your fitness by making plogging your workout of the day?
Although we may not be able to meet up in groups outside this World Clean Up Day, there is still plenty we can do from home. If you want to get involved but you’re not sure where to start, we asked Delilah David from THE ICONIC’s Sustainability team how you can get involved in cleaning up our world...
Your Local Area
The easiest way to make a difference on World Clean Up Day is to take gloves and a container or bag and pick up any rubbish you see on your daily walk or lap of the park. “You can collect takeaway coffee cups, cigarette butts, plastic containers and packaging,” Delilah tells us. “You’d be surprised what you can pick up in even 30 minutes and it feels great to give back to our community.” Make sure you take extra care to wear PPE like masks and gloves at the moment.
Around the House
“There are plenty of ways you can set up your home to be less wasteful. Cleaning out your wardrobe is a great way to make some space and you could even give your old clothes a second chance with Giving Made Easy. To learn how you can post and donate your clothes for free, see our Giving Made Easy page.”
“Composting isn't the only thing you can do at home to reduce waste – try creating a place for you to dispose of any soft plastics or batteries used. Once you have collected enough, take them with you on your next grocery shop and dispose of them responsibly.” If you aren't sure where to drop them off, see here for guidance for batteries and soft plastics. Don't forget you can also recycle THE ICONIC satchels at the same soft plastics drop off points!
Don’t Forget E-Waste
“Did you know, according to the Digital Clean Up Day website, each UK adult sending one less ‘thank you’ email a day would save over 16,433 tonnes of carbon per year – the same as 81,1522 flights to Madrid or taking 3,3343 diesel cars off the road?”
“By cleaning out our digital storage, we are not only extending the life of our gadgets and preventing excessive waste but we are saving CO2! So if you can't leave the house this Clean Up day, take some time out and clear any unnecessary emails, files, apps etc off your devices.” See more about Digital Clean Up Day here.
“And remember, once your gadgets have reached the end of their lifecycle, make sure you recycle them. 98% of the components in your computer or television can be fully recycled, but despite this many are still sent to landfill.”
