How to Detox Your Life (without really trying)

It’s time to give yourself a break!

Apparently, the average human mind has at least 50,000 thoughts every day. EVERY DAY! That’s roughly one new thought about every 1.2 seconds. So it only makes sense that every now and again you need to help your mind detox a little. Here are five ways to do just that.

Stop multitasking
If you spend your day doing about five things at any given time, it may be time to start ‘mono-tasking’. According to neuroscientist Dr Sarah McKay, our brains don’t function well when we are doing too many things at once. “You've got one beam of light, you can only focus it in one direction,” she says. “Our brains simply cannot multi-task.” She says that ‘task-switching’ actually decreases your performance and increases your stress levels!

Nap more
An easy way to detox your system, clear your mind and help you make it through the day is to rely on small naps, just like your nan did. The Sleep Health Foundation recommends short 15-30 minute naps, especially on stressful days, in order to help rebalance the brain and help your mind handle anxiety. Small naps have also been shown to increase your mental focus as well.

Book a holiday
Travelling is one of the best ways to detox your mind: not only is it easier for your brain to relax and stretch itself, but it’s also a great way to put your stresses into perspective. Research actually shows that travelling boosts your mental health, keeps your mind sharper, and it can also bring feelings of relief and happiness. That’s if you don’t get Bali belly…

Redesign your digital world
With Apple’s new phones now telling us how long we spend on social media everyday (eek), it’s about time you started to redesign and curate your digital world. Auditing social media feeds is a great way to help detox a stressed mind; unfollow any accounts that make you feel bad, or bring on feelings of jealousy. And turn off all notifications so your phone doesn’t distract you through the day. Lastly, unsubscribe from any newsletters that aren’t useful or that you don’t read anymore.

Rearrange your home
It’s amazing how something as simple as moving furniture can actually lift your mood. Pair that with some cleaning, decluttering and repurposing, and you’ll feel an instant boost. Next, improve your air quality (and help clear your mind in the process) by adding a bunch of plants to your space. On NASA’s approved air-purifying plants is the beautiful Peace Lily. Apparently it can improve your air quality by a whopping 60%! And it’s pretty easy not to kill as well…
