How Crocs Came To Dominate Footwear

Originally created for water-based activities such as boating, Crocs was unveiled at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in 2001. An instant hit amongst the aquatic community, they unexpectedly became a go-to choice for individuals who weren’t phased by following trends, and became adopted by those who were looking for convenient and comfortable footwear. At the time though, the brand somewhat flew under the radar amongst the fashionable crowd – but in 2022, all that has changed and the brand is now recognised for its ironic coolness and anti-fashion sentiment – worn by those in the sartorial elite and beyond.

Crocs’ leap to dominate the footwear market began with a strike of luck back in 2016 when fashion designer Christopher Kane requested multiple pairs for his SS17 runway show. Injected with ironic fashion swagger, the opportunity opened doors and soon after, the king of obscurity, Demna Gvasalia came knocking. Gvasalia co-opted the Crocs, recreating them to work within his Balenciaga vision. In 2017 he elevated the perforated clog, adding a 5-inch platform midsole and adorning them in Balenciaga Jibbitz. Even with the co-signs, many considered them an eyesore, but the Gvasalia effect was in place, sowing the seeds which would eventually blossom within the history books of high fashion. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Kanye West – a known Balenciaga affiliate – who has been captured on multiple occasions wearing their recent Crocs Boot collab.

Soon after the Balenciaga treatment, Crocs stopped leaving it to luck and seized the opportunity to become a collaborative powerhouse. They quickly linked with streetwear legends Alife, graphic-heavy brand PLEASURES and megastar Post Malone. They even dabbled in the Japanese fashion world tapping BEAMS for multiple reworks, as well as working with DIY legend Nicole Mclauglin. It was clear that Crocs were becoming ‘collaboratively cool’ with their joint efforts selling out with quickness. And nowadays you can often find pairs on the secondary market for hefty prices. Then when Salehe Bembury came into the picture, he was able to quickly convert any remaining non-believers with his very own signature Crocs silhouette.

With all the collabs, hype and high-fashion alignment, today Crocs are a must-have item.  Interestingly, when a trend phenomenon like this occurs in the fashion space, it sometimes means that products are gate-kept as availability is scarce and prices can be too high. But Crocs have maintained their accessible price point and their widespread availability, meaning that everyone can join in. Many consumers have also realised that if they can’t cop their favourite collaboration, they can just head to their closest store and scoop a GR edition instead! If one thing’s for sure: Crocs have staying power and more and more people are looking to ride the Crocs train. The sheer amount of people purchasing product is reflected in their sales which were up 49% in 2021, with 103 million pairs sold!
