Henry Holland Is As Obsessed With Self Help Books As We Are

Meet the Brit designer (and his new collection).

Henry Holland is the name and the force behind the hugely successful House Of Holland. It’s the brand born of slogan tees that call Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof friends and fans. Now an empire of must-have pieces, House of Holland has just landed with us at The Iconic.

So, let’s get to know the man behind the label a little, shall we?

What was the first thing you thought when you woke up this morning?
Should I go to the gym or stay under the duvet? The duvet won the alarm was switched off.

Are you a Beatles man or an Elvis man?
Neither if I’m really honest … Although I did go to Graceland a couple of years ago in Memphis and that did make me way more of an Elvis fan. Just don’t tell my dad he might disown me.

What are you obsessed with right now?
Reading self help books. I think it might be the ‘new year, new me’ January thing that may or may not pass but I’m currently determined to improve myself this year!

Inspiration – where do you usually find it?
Everywhere really but I suppose I love to tell stories and so they inspire me the most. Either through film, television, literature or art the way that you can retell a story by combining different ideas and elements to create your own narrative is what I love the most about my job. Also London as a place is one of the most inspiring things for me and my work. The eclectic mix of people and cultures means that there really is inspiration to be round on every corner.

What were you thinking / listening to / watching / reading while pulling this new collection together?
We were thinking about the inspiration and beauty that can be found in the most mundane of situations and destinations. We were working on the idea of all the different sections of society and characters that come and go from a launderette. From young fashion students to older ladies the wide cross section of society and their eclectic approve to style was what inspired this collection. We were looking at a lot of 1970s pattern books and print stories to create the prints in the collection and even referencing old wallpapers.

Tell us a little more about this collection … The prints, the fabrications, whatever it is that makes it feel special to you?
The thing that I love the most about this collection is the way that we have used track suiting and tech, shell fabrics for unexpected pieces like tiered dresses and oversized trench styles. I love the woven check pieces in blue and red too which have a hand feel almost like woven paper. The collection is all about unexpected and combined textures.

What's the topic of conversation you're doing your best to avoid right now?
Alcohol. Talking about it makes we want to drink it ...  And I’m trying not to for a few weeks.

What are you most looking forward to?
My honeymoon. I just got married and we have postponed the honeymoon until we can find the time to both get away to I can’t wait to go on a full on lie-on-my-arse-for-two-weeks holiday!
