Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: 10 Quotes To Commit To Memory

You can learn a lot from movies. John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off taught us, among other things, how to successfully call in sick, crash a Chicago street parade and destroy a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California.

But the hero of the piece? Bueller himself. A young Matthew Broderick showed us just how much you can get away with in this game called life, including how to layer like a boss.

Award-winning costume designer Marilyn Vance (also known for dressing The Breakfast Club, The Untouchables, and designing that standout red formal dress for Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman) was tasked with creating Ferris Bueller’s too cool for school aesthetic, which remains iconic to this day.

Grey pants, a white tee and matching oxford shoes are the building blocks of Bueller’s look, but it’s the addition of a one-of-a-kind vest that really makes this ‘fit sing. Fun fact: the original was actually a modified cardigan, Vance revealed, “I found it at a Marshall Fields in Chicago. It was a cardigan and I had to cut the sleeves off, because I couldn’t find anything that meshed appropriately with his little Perry Ellis suit.”

Ready to DIY? Recreate a modern version of this look with a statement knit cardigan or one of menswear designer Justin Cassin’s colourful knit vests, swap the dress shoes for white sneakers and top it off with a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers.
