It seems every year we fall into the same trap of being underprepared for winter. We reach the colder months and realise that our wardrobe isn’t quite ready to be blasted with rain or able to brave the freezing nights. With the temperature already starting to dip, we suggest getting on top of your wardrobe prep for a wintery overhaul.
Don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered.
Be Smart
Our first tip is to shop smarter and curate your wardrobe. Before you go on a shopping spree, sift through your current selection to see what you already have and what you may be able to repurpose. Notice the gaps in your closet, check if your winter coats are still in good condition or if you’re missing key footwear.
Next step? Plan! Take note of what’s missing and have a think about whether there is anything else you need to add this season, then get your shop on.
Get Technical
Over the past few years, the GORPcore trend has been brought on in full force, with an uptick in technically-driven garments being worn by both models on Europe’s top runways and the coolest people walking down the street. Brands like Arc’teryx and Patagonia have been leading the charge, with consumers turning their outdoor gear into trending must-have styles of the season. For your winter wardrobe, we’re all about some fluffy fleece – the Carhartt Prentis Liner Jacket or Patagonia’s Retro-X is a must. If the higher end price tag is a no-go and you need to cap at $200, look for brands like Billabong that offer budget-friendly options without compromising cool factor.
Luckily, the GORP trend taps a range of footwear styles that are built for cold and harsh conditions. In 2022, no one’s looking out of place rocking hiking shoes as casual winter beaters. Salomon, the French trail-turned-lifestyle brand is the obvious choice and you can’t go wrong with their updated ‘murdered-out’ Speedcross 5. If you prefer a colourful cold weather wardrobe, then the X-Mission 4 will do the trick.
You Can Never Have Enough Jackets
That’s right, you can never have too many jackets, but there are a few other must-haves you need in order to survive the cold snap. The tried-and-true puffer jacket has never failed, and thanks to modern innovations, you don’t have to purchase a gargantuan puffer that engulfs your whole body (and takes up half your closet). Slim it down with Patagonia’s more sustainable Nano Puff Jacket, or for a more elevated vibe, Edmund Hillary’s Piha Lightweight Jacket with Primaloft padding is for you.
While technical jackets were engineered to ward off rain and brave the elements, they’re also having a major streetwear moment. Canadian outdoor heavyweights Arc’Teryx are leading the charge, with their Alpha SV and Beta AR jackets tapped as the must-have outerwear this season (don’t worry, the cost-per-wear will take care of itself!). Not keen on shelling out upwards of $1000 to get the look? Patagonia’s Isthmus Jacket is a more accessible alternative, and made using recycled nylon to boot.

Secure Some Knitwear
The perfect knit is hard to come by, however they’re the most versatile addition to a cold weather ‘drobe when you find the one. Cover all of your bases and look for a cardigan, statement sweater and a sleeveless vest. Argyle never goes out of style, and Tommy Jeans do a nostalgic green, yellow and red check V-Neck Cardigan – perfect to throw on as a layering piece. If you prefer something a little more subtle, Assembly Label’s Farley Knit Cardigan is our pick. Statement knits worn oversized with denim is the outfit for coffee runs and running errands, and Andersson Bell’s Mondro Crew Neck Sweater does the job with ease. If you’ve been paying attention to your IG feed’s ‘fit pics, you’ll know sweater vests are a deceptively versatile weapon to have in your arsenal. Yep, sweater vests. They can be easily worn under slimline jackets, or layered over a long sleeve or t-shirt for crisp but sunny days. The Yianni Sweater Vest is made with Australian Merino Wool, and the ribbing exudes that minimalist Scandi vibe.
