In month one of physical distancing, when many of us were in that productive, ‘I’ve taken up ten new crafts!’ phase, all baking and raiding Bunnings for new plants to nurture, I ticked ‘arranging my wardrobe by colour’ off my list of relatively useless tasks that make you feel like you have some control over your life.
To be honest, it was satisfying – the results still are. When I open the door, I stay the heck away from the jet-black third and go up the rainbow bright end. Mmm, a paintbox of colour to pick from.
The problem was, I was rarely reaching for those uplifting brights. I was barely reaching for any of the items in my spectrum of a closet at all. The same tights and jumpers on repeat. *Image via Getty Images
We all have our go-tos and some of us depend too heavily on those, meaning that a portion of – often more interesting – items never get a turn. So, before having more working-from-home treats delivered to my door, I set myself a challenge: to wear every piece in my wardrobe. No repeats.
Cue more interesting outfits, far more stylish Zoom meetings, lowering the cost per wear of every item, reduced spending guilt and less activewear fatigue. Or so I thought.
(Little tip – don’t blab to your friends about your challenge because they sure as heck inform you when you fail!)
So as you can tell, I haven’t had a flawless record – sometimes your ‘out there’ items need to be styled back to old faithfuls; sometimes you find a new fave piece and rewear it soon after. The intention’s there.
Making an effort to show love to those neglected styles, to wear something a little more daring to dinner, and to make an event of going to get the groceries allows you to rediscover your own wardrobe in a whole new light.
Reckon you could wear every single item in your wardrobe? No repeats until you’ve worn them all? We dare you.
