The Swim Brand Making Everyone Feel Like a Bond Girl

We chat to Duskii founder Patreece Botheras

Bond girl-approved surf suit label Duskii has always been about body confidence. After all, spray-on scuba fabric is not for the wall flower.

“When we had Bree Warren walk for us at the last show, everyone said congratulations for using a plus-sized model, and I thought, she’s size 12! She’s not plus size.”

“I really appreciate the attention around it and I loved that we didn’t use an industry standard set of models that were size 8, but at the same time I felt guilty when people were saying congratulations because I thought, this is just a real body walking down the runway and it shouldn’t be such a massive deal.”

“I think for me personally, creating Duskii… I’m a mum of two, I had been living as an expat, came back to Sydney in my early 30s and I genuinely struggled to find something that was flattering. Not a teenage-y sort of wetsuit in fluoro colours, or an old lady suit. I just wanted to feel great!”

“I wanted to do something and I wasn’t sure what that was. The more I thought about it the more I thought I’ve got to create something that’s flattering for women, you know, for young girls as well of course, for older women, all-inclusive, not for one particular type of person. That’s where the whole Bond Girl thing came from which was fantastic. The Bond Girl is the Duskii girl - she’s confident, she’s active, she loves her shape. She might not be industry size 8-10 and she’s beautiful. So is that 6, 8, 10 woman too - we all are.”

“We started with a range of - just because of affordability and it’s my baby, I didn't have people say ‘here’s money, do this’, it was literally coming from my pocket - I did start with small minimums and I did only do a size 8-14 and the next year I thought ‘this is crazy, what am I doing? We need to go to a 16 and an 18’ It’s been baby steps but it still is only just being established.”

“I’m always trying to evolve and do what I can as a label to be positive. I’ve got two little girls and I want them to love what I’m doing. One of the main things that’s changed for next season is when we shoot our ecommerce, we will be shooting girls that are a size 16, tall, short, different backgrounds, everyone. We want our customer to be able to relate to this person.”
