When you’ve got American friends, they bring with them some great “holidays” that you get to jump onboard with. Take Thanksgiving. Who doesn't want an excuse to eat golden, roasted turkey and perfectly spiced pumpkin pie a month out from the imminent feast that is Christmas?
We may not have the accent guys, but our flag’s still red, white and blue.
For Independence Day this 4th July, we’re getting in the spirit by rounding up our mates, sporting emblazoned sweaters from our favourite stateside brands, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, and heading out of town for a USA-inspired weekend.

If all of Airbnb’s log cabins are booked up, don’t stress. You don’t even have to hit the road to get involved...
Eat: S’mores
The classic campfire treat is essential for your 4th July-inspired weekend. Fun to assemble, just toast a marshmallow on the fire and combine it with a chunk of American chocolate, sandwiched between two crackers. Pick up some Hershey’s from a convenience store or the international section of your supermarket for the most authentic taste.
P.S. We won’t judge you for a nip of bourbon in a trademark red cup while you toast - it is winter after all.
Play: Baseball
If you’ve got a spare hour or two on your lazy July weekender, a little friendly competition never hurt anyone. Once you figure out which two of your mates have the best hand-eye coordination, give them the positions of pitcher and catcher. Assign the rest of your gang (at least three) a base and run like the wind!

Watch: Forrest Gump
Speaking of running like the wind, this 1994 classic about the super speedy Gump covers stateside territory from college football to the Vietnam war. Plus it's a heart-warmer — remember the scene where he goes back to save his whole platoon? Grab your blankets and your s’mores and settle in.
Listen to: American Woman
Someone's got to be in charge of the playlist. Kick things off with The Guess Who's iconic anthem, American Woman and end the party on a euphoric high with American Pie — when the endorphins have peaked and the drinks are flowing, what better soundtrack to your 4th July hideaway than Don McLean’s Grammy-winning singalong of 1971?
Now, it wouldn't be an epic 4th July weekend without an all-American outfit...
