This is more than a Wes Anderson appreciation post. Sure, we’ve got love for the eccentric American filmmaker and his catalogue of offbeat cinematic feats, but today – in honour of the highly anticipated release of The French Dispatch – we’d like to concentrate our fandom into a particularly specific channel: the evergreen and era style moments to come from his aforementioned masterpieces. Seatbelts on, let’s get this show on the road.
Steve Zissou, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, 2004
Following the tale of an oddball oceanographer with an appetite for revenge, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is our first stop. In our minds, Bill Murray’s masterclass as Steve Zissou is an instant throwback to his bright and bold subversion of the fisherman’s beanie stereotype. We like our accessories LOUD.

Francis, Peter & Jack, The Darjeeling Limited, 2004
Following this line of thought we couldn’t help but reference the out-there, over-the-top, and outrageous accessory ensemble brought to life in The Darjeeling Limited. In addition to their consistently questionable neck bling, a cane, the infamous bandages and assorted accoutrements, the film also features a vibrant sleepwear snapshot showcasing the very best of at-home comfort on the road.

Chas Tenenbaum, The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001
In The Royal Tenenbaums, Ben Stiller aka Chas Tenenbaum steals the show in his impeccably-styled adi tracksuit. Detail-oriented as ever, Wes Anderson’s bright red superstar *get it* goes even further down the adidas rabbit hole when flanked by his sons, Ari and Uzi, also donning matching sets. By our count, that’s three-stripes, times three. I-C-O-N-I-C.

Bernard Berkman, The Squid and the Whale, 2005
Played by Jeff Daniels, Bernard Berkman from The Whale and the Squid is another iconic character with a memorable wardrobe. In a nod to vintage 80s style, the complex family man effortlessly executes a killer double denim look with a corduroy jacket to top things off. Take a bow. We’re taking notes then and taking those to our local second-hand store.

M. Gustav, The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
Last but certainly not least, we’re still in awe of Ralph Phiennes portrayal of M. Gustav in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Doesn’t he scrub up well? Throughout the film, the legendary concierge is dressed to the nines in early twentieth century suiting. Widely considered one of Anderson’s best films to date, we’re inclined to agree, at the very least as a strong contender in the best-dressed category. Never mind a party theme, we’re manifesting a Grand Budapest Hotel-esque wedding.
