There comes a time in a man’s life when he realises skincare is an essential investment. Much more sophisticated than the dubious bar of soap sitting next to the bathroom sink, a simple skincare ritual can provide the perfect bookends to a busy day. With 47-year-old anti-ageing paradox Pharrell Williams recently jumping on board with his own label, we thought we’d guide you through some of the basics of men’s skincare and upkeep.
Facial Cleanser
First things first: you’ve got to start with a clean canvas. Over the course of a regular day, dirt, sweat and dead skin all accumulate on your face; you have to get that off. This makes using a facial cleanser with active ingredients an essential starting point in your skincare process. While you’re there, using a product with salicylic acid and witch hazel will control any excess oil build-up. Washing your face is a must after a hard day’s work, of course, but you’d be wise to kickstart your day with a cleanse too. It not only rids your skin of nighttime grime, but the splash of cold water is a nice early-morning energy boost.
Eye Cream
How is it still culturally acceptable to hit someone with the line: ‘Oh, you look tired. Are you getting enough sleep?’ Translation: You look cooked today.
Let’s alleviate some of the social unpleasantness with a good eye cream technique – a simple yet effective way of looking like you’ve spent a month in a Tibetan spiritual retreat. Eye cream is the great utility of skincare, building resistance against those bags under your eyes, the classic puffy face the morning after a big night, or the dreaded crows feet edging their way into your youthful complexion. Let’s not forget, eye skin is the thinnest, most sensitive area of your face, so using a cream that possesses a high concentration of all the good ingredients is key. Just be gentle when applying!
Moisturiser
A good moisturiser allows your skin to drink up healing properties, while also combating dryness. It’s good to experiment with gels, creams and lotions here, as everyone’s skin reacts differently to moisturisers, and finding one that doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve fallen face-first into alien goop is harder than it sounds!
SPF
As the sun gets ready to singe and sizzle bodies at beaches and towns all across Australia, there’s nothing more essential to skincare than SPF. In all seriousness, UV rays are the biggest contributor to ageing skin (and more serious ailments), and using daily sunscreen is the most effective weapon. Please don’t be that itinerant lobster we’re all inconspicuously posting on our Instagram Stories this summer.
Exfoliator
If you’re ready to take things up a notch, consider the use of an exfoliator. By removing dead skin cells and excess oil, exfoliators will enliven your skin and keep it from looking dull or lifeless. If you have sensitive skin, a non-abrasive exfoliator containing alpha hydroxy acid will suffice, as the formula gently cleans away dead cells without the harshness of scrubs.
Mask
There’s nothing that says ‘I’m taking care of number one’ like a good face mask. But remember, face masks are intended to support your daily skincare routine – not replace it. Never tried it? Start with a good clay or mud mask. They’re gentle on your skin and will penetrate the surface to remove embedded oil and dirt.
Don’t be overwhelmed – there are literally hundreds of different face masks out there. Take your time and pick which one works best for you.
Night Cream
Close out your day by treating yourself to a nightly cream. Your skin is actually doing most of the heavy lifting while you sleep, so anything that aids the rejuvenation process is a bonus. Formulated to penetrate over several hours, night cream is your ideal companion once your head hits the pillow (well, solution-based companion).
