5 Sustainable New Year's Resolutions

Better for the environment.

Each new year brings a renewed sense of optimism for the fresh 12 months ahead. A blank slate to achieve anything your heart desires. So while you’re setting those goals to ‘better’ yourself, why not make a couple that benefit the environment too? Here are 5 achievable ways to improve your impact on the planet at home and at work…

1. He’s a keeper
If you haven’t already been using one, a keep cup is essential for 2020. Super compact and portable – many collapse down – and best of all, some cafes give you a discount for bringing yours. Even taking a mug down to the local coffee shop is widely acceptable (and you often get a little more coffee for your buck due to the larger size than your average disposable cup.)
Come to mention it, a refillable water bottle is also a must.

2. Carpool karaoke
If you’re heading to a destination that’s not ideal for public transport, on foot or by bike, then sharing rides with your colleagues and friends is a great way to save on fuel and parking fees, plus you can overtake the traffic by driving in T2 and T3 lanes. Make a playlist or maximise time and have your 1:1s in the car.

3. Get un-wasted
Challenge yourself to have completely waste-free lunches by bringing food in a reusable, non-plastic container or covering with a beeswax wrap. You’ll quickly notice other colleagues begin to do the same.

4. Switcheroo
Both at home and in the workplace, consider, and chat to your office coordinator about, swapping out paper towels where possible, antibacterial wipes and other single use and disposable everyday items. Avoid disposable cutlery and choose condiments in larger quantities – a better option than those tiny plastic soy sauce fish from your local sushi joint. Seemingly small things can significantly cut down the workplace’s impact on the environment.

5. Be the change you wish to see
Not all businesses have someone in charge of sustainability yet and friends often need to see how easy it is to reduce your environmental footprint. Why not offer to lead by example and drive more sustainable choices like more comprehensive recycling, clothes swaps and book exchanges once you’re done?
