Spike Lee: if you don’t know his films, you know his music videos. Public Enemy’s Fight The Power, Grandmaster Flash’s White Lines, Arrested Development’s Revolution. The New York director is the Yankee King and has been producing the must-watch on our list since 1983. He’s got an Academy Award, Emmys, Peabodies, and his latest effort, BlacKKKlansman (2018) picked up the Grand Prix.
His films are about standing up for what’s right, about change for the better. And, they’re beyond addictive. The kind you watch from start to finish with no need for distractions … not even popcorn. Here’s a few of our faves for a rainy day.
Girl 6 (1996)
With a soundtrack by Prince, this is a Spike Lee classic as an aspiring actress turns her talents elsewhere to make rent. Talk about all star: you’ll see Jenifer Lewis, Madonna, Naomi Campbell … And Quentin Tarantino even makes an appearance.
Do The Right Thing (1989)
Often called Lee’s masterpiece and is mandatory viewing for anyone who made their way through film school, this effort takes its title from the Malcolm X quote Do the right thing, It’s raw and real on the streets on NY.
Inside Man (2006)
“Why? Because I can.”
A bank heist thriller with a high stakes negotiation headlining Clive Owen and Denzel Washington. No chance you’ll be tempted to scroll Instagram during this one.
25th Hour (2002)
“One wrong choice... one last night... 24 hours to live a lifetime.” Cornered by the DEA, Edward Norton’s character has 24 hours of freedom before he goes down for seven years. Will definitely make you revaluate any and all life choices.
He Got Game (1998)
With the tagline, ‘The father, the son and the holy game’, this Lee joint tells the tale of a a very young Denzel Washington who has to convince his son – who he named Jesus – to go to college in exchange for a shorter stint inside. Michael Jordon, among others, make the screen too. A must for any ball fans.
