Consider yourself a chronic overpacker? You’re not alone. But there are plenty of reasons why taking carry-on only is a good idea, even when we’re talking long haul. To start, you'll never have to worry about losing your bags (always a travel nightmare), and you’ll likely save a small fortune on baggage fees. But best of all, you’ll save yourself the hassle of hauling a hefty suitcase up all those stairs to that idyllic Paris studio you’re eyeing off. If you’re keen on packing light for your next holiday, we have a few tips for you…
1. Know your limits
No, we’re not talking metaphorically but literally in this case. Each and every airline is different when it comes to carry-on baggage so you need to know exactly what size and weight you’re allowed to arm yourself with pre-departure. Once you’ve acquainted yourself with your allowance, grab a tape measure and a scale – these are essential for avoiding the sting of the overweight fine once boarding. And don’t forget to keep in mind the weight of your luggage itself!
2. Leave your high maintenance routines at home
The key difference between carry-on and check-in luggage (aside from a handful of kgs) comes down to toiletries – remember that your liquids, including beauty and skincare items, can’t exceed 100mL or risk it being thrown in the bin. If you’re keen to stick to carry-on-only, you’ll need to forgo Kardashian-style grooming and keep it low key with the absolute basics – preferably travel-sized miniatures. Keep in mind that hotels provide shampoo and conditioner (if not more) as do plenty of Airbnbs. And don’t forget to pack those toiletries within easy reach at the top of the suitcase for security. Extra points if the beauty case itself is transparent.
3. Lean in to the capsule wardrobe
It may seem obvious but when it comes to travelling light, the less you take with you the better. Be strategic about what you’re going to wear, which means planning ahead comes in handy, as does a capsule wardrobe. Think of those versatile, classic pieces which will see you through a Euro summer (or winter for that matter). A trench coat, a white shirt, linen pants – the kind of clothing that achieves maximum outfits from minimum baggage. It’s not a bad idea to check the weather ahead of your departure too so you can plan accordingly – are you on your way to a heatwave or to a cold snap?

4. Wear your heaviest gear on the plane
By wearing all your heaviest clothing on your flight over, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone. Want to know why? Well not only will these extra layers keep you cold during the flight (which tends to be chilled at fridge-like temperatures), but it will also free up some space in your case and rid it of a few extra kgs. When you plan your flight outfit, keep in mind that jeans, jackets, and chunkier shoes like runners will weigh more than light linen and sandals. And scarves, sarongs, and jumpers can be thrown over your shoulders for an extra layer. Just don’t go overboard by wearing five pants, eight tops and three jackets all at the same time…
