We’re told it takes a rough 21 days to make or break a habit. In that time frame your brains and your muscles and your spirit and whatever else it is you believe in makes all kinds of connections, has all kinds of revelations to get you to where that behaviour will eventually lead you.
Making habits stick, no matter how all those weird and wonderful things work, can prove to be a tricky business. Deadlines come up. You have to work late. You’ve got Dad’s 70th. And there you are, all of a sudden, out of synch with all that you’d intended.
There are, though, some instant pick-you-ups you can do on the daily to keep your day feeling fine. Your yoga practice. A daily baptism of salt water in the ocean. Rolling out of bed with a smile and a stretch.
Instead, though, you’re checking your emails last thing and night and first thing in the morning.
It's time to change that habit. But how?
Start your day right
“The first hour of the morning is crucial,” write Louis L. Hay, wellness author, speaker, and the founder of publishing giant Hay House . “How you spend it will determine your experience of the rest of your day.”
She’s a massive fan of waking up with the affirmation that it’s going to be a good day. After all, surely if you say something enough times, it’s got half a chance at becoming real.
So, do something that makes you feel good. Be it a cup of tea in bed, telling your bed mate just how handsome you think they are, or taking a few extra minutes to enjoy that under the doona vibe.
Chow down on mood-boosting foods
You’re looking for those jam-packed with omega-3s. Think oily fish like salmon, dark leafy greens and walnuts. Turns out, you should make friends with salad.
Smile
Even when you don’t feel like it. Psychologist and bestselling author Richard Wiseman, in The As If Principle: The Radically New Approach To Changing Your Life found that simply by smiling, you become measurably happier.
“The message from this type of work is simple – if you want to cheer yourself up, behave like a happy person,” Wiseman tells us. Fake it ‘til you make it.
