With high fashion brands taking a more leisurely approach to their collections than ever before, we’re seeing the trickle-down effect have huge impacts on what’s trendy in day-to-day resort wear and swimwear. Of course, the days of below-the-knee, baggy swim shorts are well behind us, but even though we’ve all picked up a more trendy pair of boardshorts or two by now, the most recent European summer has brought about a number of new trends that could define how Australia’s most fashionable take to the water in the months to come.
If you want to take your beachwear vibes to the next level, here are a series of trends we’ve spotted that are going to be big this summer.
Recycled swimwear
It’s almost more common these days to see brands making boardshorts using recycled materials than not, and it makes sense. The material swim shorts are typically made of, like nylon and polyester, are easily accessible in recycled form. As such, it’s easier than ever to get your hands on a pair of swim shorts that can help prevent potential waste from ending up in the ocean you’ll be swimming in. Look in particular for REPREVE® recycled polyester in the fabric composition, which is made using recycled plastic bottles – The Rocks Push is a great place to start. You can also filter our Considered Edit by Sustainable Materials to find other products made using materials that have a lower environmental impact than conventional alternatives from top brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Country Road.
Statement Speedos
Y-front swimming trunks have long been a bit of an ironic thing to wear of late, but when worn right, can be evocative of the chic swimwear style you’d typically see on the Amalfi coast, particularly when worn with something like a linen shirt and some Birkenstocks, the smarter men's sandals. Previously we'd suggest avoiding loud prints and get something either plain or with a more simpler print, but these days we're embracing bold budgie smugglers, like the ornate swim briefs by Camilla and even the cheeky patterns of Speedos.
Colour blocking
Tropical-themed prints and motifs have their place at low-key bbqs and pool parties, but this summer, if you're looking for swimwear that can take you from beach to bar with absolute ease, lean into the more minimalist designs, like boardshorts with a heavy vertical stripe or plain block colour. Don't be afraid to try fits that are a little bit shorter than you're maybe used to, with styles that fall mid-thigh becoming more popular among brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and BOSS.
