Setting off to explore our breathtaking terrain? Now’s the time to adventure close to home, but conditions aren’t always a walk in the park. Here, Monique Farmer of @womenwantadventure tells us the absolute essentials of her outdoor hiking kit.
“It’s always important before you head off, let someone know where you are going and what time you will be back.
“Every hike is different, however basic essentials no matter where you go could include:
1. Navigation: map, compass and a personal locator beacon (PLB)
2. First aid: including blister packs and personal medication
3. Knife: a small pocket knife is helpful for a multitude of purposes
4. Fire: matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove. A Jet Boil is great for cups of tea
5. Headlamp: plus, don't forget some extra batteries
6. Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes and sunscreen
7. Shelter: a small tarp
8. Extra food: an extra bar or sandwich (you will always eat more chocolate than you think!)
9. Extra water: take more than you think you will need
10. Extra clothes: be sure to pack extras, including a thermal layer
