With Aussie Margot Robbie about to premiere as Queen Elizabeth 1 in the Oscar-worthy royal biopic Mary Queen of Scots, we thought it’d be a good chance to take a night (or 10) to binge on the best historical drama on- demand TV can provide! Here is our round up of our faves:

The Tudors
Period: 1500s Century England
Channel: Stan
Depicting one of the most dramatic and dangerous times in British history, The Tudors is an over the top, slightly cheesy and totally brilliant, tale of the court of Henry VIII. The deceit, the sex (lots of it), the conniving plans and men in tights… this series has it all.

Outlander
Period: 1700s Scotland
Channel: Netflix
Who doesn’t love a time-travelling historical drama! When a 1940’s holiday with her husband suddenly turns into 1700s Scotland, Claire Randall, decides to marry an impossibly good-looking Scottish warrior (half her luck). She is then stuck between worlds and hot husbands. Sounds pretty great to us!

Downton Abbey
Period: 1900s England
Channel: Netflix
A classic. We’re talking early last century when manners and conversation were stiffer than the high-buttoned collars everyone wore. This view of ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ life in an English manor is surprisingly interesting and full of romance, murder and drama. Plus, the movie hits cinemas early next year.

Vikings
Period: 800s Norway
Channel: Netflix
Follow the ruggedly handsome Ragnar Lothbrok as he builds his Viking empire. His incredibly sexy wife is the strong role model we all need and the beautiful scenery of Scandinavia is the perfect cure for the huge amount of battles, weapons and warring that goes on.

The Crown
Period: 1900s England
Channel: Netflix
A crowd favourite, The Crown is a hugely ambitious drama capturing the life of the British Royal family in the 20 th century. Season three is just about to premiere, so catch up on the first two seasons asap. A word of warning… it’s a slow mover, but once you’re hooked, you will not even want to pause for a Doritos refill.

Band of Brothers
Period: World War Two Europe
Channel: Foxtel Now
This series arguably paved the way for all big-budget modern historic TV dramas. Long before Homeland, Damien Lewis carved his way to TV immortality by playing the beating heart of Easy Company, which fought its way from the beaches of Normandy to Hitler’s mountain retreat in Bavaria.

Victoria
Period: 1800s England
Channel: Foxtel
Loved The Crown? Get to know the Queen’s great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria. It’s a pretty modern story… Queen Victoria apparently married for love (unusual in those days) and also ruled the Empire as a strong and respected woman. She had nine children. NINE. And saw the start of the age of technology in the UK. There are two series to binge on already, with a third coming soon.
