In Search Of Surf-Proof Swimwear

Please. Stay. On.

There are those moments. You are in the perfect place in the line up. The water is glassy and the sky is clear and that wave headed your way has your name written all over it. And, you’re up.

And then, it happens. You lose your top. Or worse still, your briefs.

As the weather – and the water temp – heats up, you’re less inclined to reach for your wettie. So, how to avoid wardrobe malfunctions in the swimwear stakes?

For those graceful pop-ups or the not-so-elegant slide offs, you want styles that are white water-proof. We’re searching for skin-hugging silhouettes, clean lines and hard-wearing fabrics, for a style that holds you tight and won’t run away. Shapes that have been tried and tested, in all kind of conditions.

So, what’s on our list? We’re a massive fan of the one-piece, the maillot. Sleeves, as always are optional. High-waisted briefs, too, are always a good time. When it comes to showing some skin, it’s a simple case of rolling that fabric down a touch. If you go for a style with ties, make sure they’re right. Nor do you want any embellishments that will dig in as you paddle. Simple, clean elegant is what you’re after when putting those toes on the nose.

And while we’ve got slip, slop (SPF 50, people) and slap downpat, we want something that’s not going to leave us with a hard-to-hide tan line. A hot tip from those who get wet on the regular? Buy one size smaller than usual. That way, the stretch won’t let you down.

Whether you’re a serious surfer or just there to get your hair wet, here’s some surf-ready styles to choose from…
