With City2Surf looming on the calendar, we checked in with Olympian and sprinter Ella Nelson to sus out the core exercises potential runners need to know. The PUMA ambassador has run the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the World Championships in Beijing and London, and the summer Olympic games in Rio.

Plank variations
“To make it more difficult, try raising your opposite arm and leg. This targets your core and the whole posterior chain.”Here are some more variations to play with to keep your workout feeling fresh.

Dead bug
“Gets a deep core work out every time.”

V-sits
“Challenging! You can make it more difficult but moving to single leg or adding a medicine ball.”

Reverse crunches and runners’ crunches
“Focus on the deep core muscles and hip stabilisers.”

Oblique bicycle crunches and heel taps
“Concentrates on the cross-sectional ab sling creating great stability and control for when you’re at full speed!”

Nelson’s hot tip? Try three sets of 15 reps for each exercise
