When you land in Kauai, it’s like discovering what’s on the other side of the rainbow. A world so intoxicating. So sweet. So lush. It’s hard to imagine that such a place still exists while on the morning commute with our keep cups topped up and the Spotify playlist blaring (politely in the headphones). But it does. And has for over 5 million years. Making it the most ancient of the Hawaiian archipelago. And, some may argue, the most exquisite too. Known for its romantic volcanic vistas and exotic blooms, in Kauai everything begins with the landscape. The prehistoric flora and fauna that thrive within its deep green valleys, the lava red canyons, azure blue waves.

Though the food be farm-to-plate delicious you don’t come here to eat. You swim, surf, hike, sun, sleep. Life here is simple. Casual and spontaneous being the preferred method of travel. Ditch the dinner reservation and picnic on the beach instead, barefoot with a takeaway fish taco. It’s hard to resist the rich tropical aromas that waft out of the food trucks. Head to the north shore for a more rustic than luxe escape. Somehow the locals have kept this pocket of paradise glamour-free, where the south side has been conquered by the big-name resorts. With one of the most pristine environments and purest water sources in the world it’s nice to be conscious when visiting these parts. The natives ask that you use reef-friendly sunscreen and bring your own water bottle to reduce waste.
